  • The Dutch/Holland damp proof course system, probably the ugliest and most unreliable system ever invented. To read an independent review of the Holland system read our blog.   Unfortunately this client had these to installed to resolve a rising damp problem in a bay window as advised by the makers of the system Holland. In the end the system did not work as they had said it would. Why? Because the wall did not have rising damp, it was condensation. Unfortunately he had to go through the unnecessary expense of installing these ugly bricks into his house and wasting his money before getting the correct advice from us....
  • When I saw this I just had to pull over and take this picture. This contractor had obviously discovered this building not only had a problem with rising damp on the ground floor but also on the first floor too and decided it would be a good idea to install a Dutch damp proof course system to both floor levels. Unfortunately I never got to meet the owner of this property, which is probably for the best as I don't think they really needed me to explain they had wasted all their money.   • 1,2,3,4 how many damp proof courses do you need? Another classic, the passage wall of a 1950's York property. The building was constructed with an original blue brick engineering damp proof course, although over the years numerous contractors had decided that 1 damp proof course simply wasn't enough. In total I counted 3 retro fit chemically injected systems installed in addition to the original. The actual cause of their problem was condensation, its shame they hadn't contacted us first.
  • Choosing the correct position for your damp proof course installation is critical. This property already had a physical blue brick damp proof course however this contractor decided it needed a new one so decided to install another chemical system into the mortar joint. Building regulations and standard codes of practice stipulate that a damp proof course should be installed a minimum of 150mm above external ground level to prevent the damp proof course becoming bridged by standing water or rain water splash back. This contractor however decided probably the higher above ground the better and installed their DPC 225mm above ground level, as such they bridged their own damp proof course by the plastering internally which extended beyond it. (note the damp proof course installation marked by the red dotted line).
  • This contractor obviously decided this property had an issue with rising damp however their solution was to  inject a water repellent chemical directly into the buildings solid blue brick engineering damp proof course. These bricks are impermeable hence their primary use in below ground situations or as physical damp proof courses and as such will not absorb moisture. Another pointless damp proof course installation and a waste of time and money....  
  • This is a classic. This contractor diagnosed this 1990's cavity built property with rising damp and decided to install a chemical damp proof course to the side elevation wall. Not only was the damp proof course installed approximately 75mm above external ground level but was installed into a modern building incorporating a horizontal physical Upvc damp proof course, which you can see within the mortar bed joint just above the chemical injection. Obviously the repair failed (through misdiagnosis) and when we were called to survey the property the causes was due to a toilet waste pipe leaking within the cavity.
